I recently embarked on a luxurious train journey through the Alps, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. The Alpine Belle, a one-of-a-kind experience, offered a private voyage along some of the most breathtaking railway lines in Europe. What sets this trip apart is the combination of vintage steam haulage and overnight stays in exquisite five-star hotels, a stark contrast to the electric engines of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
The journey began in Cologne, Germany, and took us through southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, with overnight stops in Lindau, Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Wiesbaden. The highlight of the trip, in my opinion, was the daily life aboard the train. The menu was exquisite, with dishes like chicken breast in a creamy lemon sauce and Tafelspitz, Emperor Franz Josef's favorite braised beef delicacy. The Swiss chefs prepared everything fresh in the kitchen car, and the regional wines paired perfectly.
The crew was exceptional, with a Qantas cabin crew veteran as the steward, ensuring a warm and attentive service. The owner of the carriages, Dany Weigeli, shared fascinating stories about acquiring vintage vehicles from continental trains. The guard, Carsten Ott, with his larger-than-life personality, added to the charm of the journey.
One of the most memorable aspects was the attention to comfort outside the train. Marianne Robertson, the wife of the Belle Trains founder, ensured that passengers had a pleasant experience even when not on board. From the charming Hotel Engel in Lindau to the luxurious Interalpen hotel in Seefeld, the accommodations were top-notch.
The journey also offered various optional excursions, such as a Mozart concert in Salzburg and a trip to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, though I opted for a more indulgent experience at the Hotel Sacher, enjoying a slice of sachertorte cake.
The steam charter along the main line from Salzburg to the Austrian Railway Museum was a thrilling adventure, reminiscent of Stephenson's Rocket. The journey behind an ancient cog railway engine, huffing and puffing into the mountains, was equally captivating.
As we arrived in Wiesbaden, the journey's end, I felt a sense of satisfaction and envy for those who had experienced this unique adventure. The Emerald Isle Belle, next year's special train, promises a similar experience but with a more leisurely pace through Ireland. This journey is a testament to the beauty of rail travel and the importance of comfort and luxury in the travel experience.
